A data collection plan should be developed that clearly describes:
- What information should be recorded,
- When information should be recorded,
- How information should be recorded, and
- Who is responsible to record information.
It is important that winery staff understand the importance of monitoring water use and contribute to the development of the data collection plan. For additional guidance on engaging employees, refer to the Strategic Water Management module.
Data collected through tracking sheets should be regularly entered into a spreadsheet so that it is easy to retrieve and can be used to track consumption over time and identify trends.
It is good practice to occasionally record the reading on meters before and after a period of inactivity (such as overnight) to identify any unexpected water use, which could indicate leaks or faulty equipment.
Record the units used by each meter (i.e. litres, gallons, cubic meters) since these may vary between manufacturers.
