How to Obtain Support from Employees
It is necessary to engage all employees in the winery (production, hospitality and retail) to successfully integrate water into the operations. Their behaviour and actions will directly impact water performance.
Provide Education and Training
Changing employees mindset and behaviour on water requires on-going education, training, and reinforcement of priorities. For new practices and procedures, instructions can be posted in appropriate areas to act as a reminder.
A good time to have training sessions to reinforce behaviour is prior to the start of different activities (e.g., before harvest or bottling).
Make Water Visible
Making water consumption more visible is a proven way to increase employee awareness and water performance. This can include installing low-cost point-of-use water meters, charts in the lunchroom that track daily water use, and communicating progress towards water goals.
Wineries have reduced water consumption by 10-20% just by installing water meters, monitoring water consumption and making water use visible to employees.
Recognize and Celebrate Successes
Celebrating success can take the form of rewards or recognition of employees that have made contributions towards water goals. This recognition can apply to group achievements, such as meeting water efficiency targets, or individual accomplishments such as identifying new opportunities to reduce water use.
Focus on small wins as a way to gain broader employee support. Celebrating these small wins can build momentum to achieve broader water performance goals.
